A George James, son of Anthony James, was baptised at North Nibley on 20th May 1647 but this is rather early perhaps…? An Anthony James was buried at North Nibley on 10th October 1698.

 

George James and Mary Dorney married at North Nibley on 10th November 1685. George Son of George and Mary James was baptised at North Nibley on 26th November 1691.

 

George James was buried on 4th January 1700 and Mary James, widow, on 20th September 1702.

Also mother of George James

Mary, daughter of John Dorney, was baptised at North Nibley on 13th July 1651.

George James and Mary Dorney married at North Nibley on 10th November 1685.

Mary, daughter of George and Mary James was baptised at North Nibley on 20th July 1687 and

George Son of George and Mary James was baptised at North Nibley on 26th November 1691.

George James was buried on 4th January 1700 and Mary James, widow, on 20th September 1702


Their children were Great VIII Uncles and Aunts of Richard Barton:

 

GEORGE JAMES, Great VIII Uncle of Richard Barton

George Son of George and Mary James was baptised at North Nibley on 26th November 1691. His father died in 1700 and his mother in 1702.

He was mentioned with his sister in the will of John Dorney, his grandfather, in 1706.

George James, son of George, was buried on 5th October 1714 at North Nibley.


 

MARY TROTMAN, Great VII Grandmother of Richard Barton

 

Daughter of George James and Mary (nee Dorney)

Mother of Mary Perrett

 

Mary was baptised on 20th July 1687, daughter of George and Mary James of North Nibley.

Her father died in 1700 and her mother in 1702. She was mentioned with her brother, George, in the will of John Dorney, her grandfather, in 1706. George, however, died in 1714.

Mary James married William Trotman V, a son of Nicholas Trotman  of Bearnstream, at North Nibley on 1st April 1711. William Trotman V was described as ‘Junior of North Nibley, Clothworker’. William and Mary had a daughter, Mary, who was baptised at North Nibley on 24th February 1711/12.

William Trotman V was buried at North Nibley on 19th June 1716, aged twenty-nine-years, and his will was proved on 15th October 1717. He left his widow and five-year-old daughter.

Her burial may have taken place on 20th May 1719 (elsewhere 2nd May)  – ‘The wife of William Trotman’. However, she may have married Isaac Gypper at North Nibley on 2nd October 1725.

F.H. Trotman writes:

 

‘The eldest son William married Mary James by whom he had a daughter Mary. He died soon afterwards.’

Adrian is mentioned as a son in the will of John Dorney, weaver of North Nibley which was proved in 1589.

Adrian Dorney married Avice Trippett at Awre on 23rd February 1603. In 1633 Adrian Dorney, a weaver of North Nibley, made his will and mentions his son John who also had a son John.

Adrian Dorney was buried at Nibley on 22nd March 1633/4.


ALICE or ANIES or AVICE DORNEY, Great XI Grandmother of Richard Barton

Alice or Anies was baptised at Awre on 4th February 1583/84, daughter of Henry Trippett. Her father married Margaret Berrowe at Awre on 21st October 1582.

 

Adrian Dorney married Avice or Alice Trippett at Awre on 23rd February 1603.

 

Adrian Dorney was buried at Nibley in on 22nd March 1633/34 and no wife was mentioned in the will.

Alice, the daughter of Thomas and Joan Okes, was baptised on 11th September 1603. Thomas and Joan Okes are also my Great IX Grandparents through my Barton and Winstone Families which makes my Great II Grandparents, John Barton and Sarah (nee Perrett) distant cousins.

 

John Dorney and Alice Okes were married on 31st October 1625.

Mentioned in the will of her brother, John Okes, dated 13th February 1630

‘Item I give unto my sister Alce Downey 20s and to her two children 5s a peece.’

Guy Vincent:

I had noticed both a Geoffrey Okes having children and also a Thomas who died in 1602 in Wotton that are likely candidates as father for the Thomas Okes buried in 1634. It is frustrating that no marriage shows up in Wotton for Thomas and Joan but presumably Thomas at least, was local as evidenced by the older Thomas and Geoffrey in the 1570s.

A John Dorny son of John Dorny was baptised at Wotton-under-Edge on 28th January 1629.

Mentioned in the will of his uncle, John Okes, dated 13th February 1630: ‘Item I give unto my sister Alce Downey 20s and to her two children 5s a peece.’

 

Jonah Okes left a legacy to him in his will of 1688: ‘Also I give my cousin John Dorny of Nibly five shillings.’

 

On 17th October 1706 John Dorney, yeoman of North Nibley made his last will and testament. He mentions his wife Mary and his grandchildren George and Mary James.

In the name of God Amen …seventeenth day of October 1706:

‘I John Dorney of North Nibley, in the County of Gloucester, yeoman, being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory, praised be God……

I give to my son-in-law George Gillings the house he now dwells in and the ground called the Hark during the natural lives of my daughters Jane and my grandchild Samuel Copy.

Item I give to my grandchild Thomas Daws one shilling to be paid within six months after my decease.

Item I give to Mary my wife all the rest of my goods and chattels during her natural life and after my wife’s decease my will is that all my goods and chattels except George Gilling’s house and ground called the Hark shall all be equally divided between my daughter Alice Copy, and my daughter Jane Horwood and my daughter Joane Gillings and to my two grandchildren George James and Mary James. One fourth to each but the fourth to be shared between George and Mary James…..

I make and ordain Samuel Copy my son-in-law to be executor to this my last will and testament….

Rachel was born on 8th January and baptised on 30th January 1654 at North Nibley.

Thomas Dawe and Rachell Dorney were married at North Nibley on 15th April 1683.

Rachel Dawe was buried on 5th January 1685 (1686)

Their child was a cousin of Mary Trotman, Great VII Grandmother of Richard Barton

THOMAS DAWE, cousin of Mary Trotman

 

Thomas the son of Thomas Dawe was baptised on 15th January 1683 (1684) at North Nibley.

 

Thomas was mentioned in the will of John Dorney, his grandfather in 1706.


REBECCA DORNEY, Great IX Aunt of Richard Barton

 

Rebecca was born on 9th September and baptised on 4th October 1656 at North Nibley


THOMAS DORNEY, Great IX Uncle of Richard Barton

 

Thomas Dorney was born on 6th November and baptised on 28th November 1658 at North Nibley.

 


JOAN GILLINGS, Great IX Aunt of Richard Barton

 

Joan daughter of John Dorney was baptised at North Nibley on 16th November 1661

Joane Dorney and George Gillings were married at North Nibley on 25th July 1688.

Possible dates of baptisms for their children at North Nibley but not actually checked yet:

Joan 22nd May 1689, John 1st October 1692, Mary 13th April 1695, Timothy 3rd June 1698, Rachel born 5th and baptised 7th June 1704, Abigail 13th January 1705.

 

George Gillings died 26th September 1721. There is an inventory preserved.

He was buried on 28th September 1721.


ALICE COOPEY, Great IX Aunt of Richard Barton

Alse Dorney married Samuel Coopey at Wotton-under-Edge on 29th December 1680.

Samuel was a Serge weaver of Church Lane, Wotton-under-Edge.

Samuel made his will on 10th February 1720. He made his wife Alice executrix and his son Samuel trustee of the will. He mentioned his house in Church Lane and also leasehold property in North Nibley occupied by Jane Horwood and Samuel Coopey. He left Alice forty pounds and stock together with use of his houses during her natural life. Left son Samuel one guinea and his daughters £12 in serges and linens from personal stock. Alice was left the property in North Nibley after demise of her mother and then it was to pass to Jane. Alice and Jane were also to have his house in Church Lane after their mother’s death. Daughter Mary Hall to have £5 in stock and money. Two looms to go to Alice and Jane Coopey. Granddaughter Alice Hall to have a bed and bedstead. Also after his wife’s death Alice and Jane were to keep Alice Hall until she was eighteen giving her an allowance of ten shillings a year.

Samuel Coopey died on 25th July 1722 and Alice on 9th September 1729.

Their children were cousins of Mary Trotman, Great VII Grandmother of Richard Barton:

Mary Coopey married Solomon Hall on 6th February 1710 and they had nine children.

 

Daughter Alice Hall was baptised on 5th February 1711 at Wotton-under-Edge.

Mary Hall was buried at Wotton on 15th June 1729 and Solomon Hall on 28th August 1738.


JANE HORWOOD, Great IX Aunt of Richard Barton

Jane Dorney of Nibley and William Horwood of Berkeley were married at North Nibley on 18th April 1696.

Jane, wife of William Horrwood was buried at North Nibley on 30th April 1730 and William Horood was buried on 3rd September 1734.
