John married Lois Tyler on 26th December 1681 at Wotton-under-Edge.

Lois was buried on 18th January 1720 at Wotton.

His sister ‘Susanna daughter of John Humphries’ was baptized on 16th November 1684 at Wotton-under-Edge.

Also Father of Humphrey, Stephen, Anne Wilmott, Infant William, Infant John, Infant Nathan and Daniel

Stephen Humphreys was baptized on 19th November 1682 at Wotton-under-Edge. He was the son of John Humphreys who married Lois Tyler there on 26th December 1681.

Stephen Humphreys married Ann Seaborn on 11th April 1706 at Wotton. She was probably a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Seaborn alias Beale of Wortley and baptized on 4th May 1678 but this birth date does not fit perfectly with Bigland who indicates that her birth year might be 1682.

According to Bigland Ann died on 24th December 1745 aged sixty-three years and Stephen died on 26th January 1766 aged eighty-four years.

Who was Ann Seaborn?

Samuel Seaborn, alias Beale, of Wortley, made his will on 6th June 1705. He left legacies to his wife Sarah, and son Edward and Samule , son of Edward, his grandson. He also mentions daughters Sarah, Mary, Anne, Hester and Hannah. In addition, there is a reference to his brother-in-law, George Parsons, a clothier of Reading, Berkshire. The will was proved on 13th May 1707.

Samuel and Sarah had the following children baptized at Wotton:

Edward 13-1-1671

Sarah, widow, was buried on 4th June 1714.

HUMPHREY HUMPHREYS, Great VI Uncle of Richard Barton

 

‘Humphrey son of Stephen Humphreys and Ann’ was baptized on 23rd March 1712 at Wotton.

He was a Painter of the Steep, Wotton.

He married Hester or Esther Witters on 16th September 1636. According to Bigland Hester died on 11th November 1744 aged thirty-five years.

Humphrey then married Mary Taylor on 1st October 1749 at Wotton-under-Edge and according to Bigland she died on 17th February 1765 aged thirty-five years.

Humphrey made his will on 30th October 1776 and according to Bigland he died on 12th June 1782 aged sixty-nine years. His will was proved on 8th July 1782.

 

Their children were cousins of Abraham Humphreys:

 

BETTY HUMPHREYS

 

‘Betty of Humphry and Mary Humphries’ was baptized at Wotton on 26th June 1750.

 

HUMPHERY HUMPHREYS

 

Humphery was baptized on 18th July 1754 At Wotton. He was buried on 28th September 1807 aged fifty three years.

 

MARY HUMPHREYS

Mary was baptized on 16th August 1756 at Wotton.

WILLIAM HUMPHREYS

William was baptized at Wotton on 29th October 1759.

 


STEPHEN HUMPHREYS, Great VI Uncle of Richard Barton

 

No baptism at Wotton. Stephen was a Ropemaker of Wotton-under-Edge. He was buried on 22nd April 1774 at Wotton and his will was proved on 28th April 1774.

He may have married Mary Cook on 17th July 1743.


ANN WILMOT, Great VI Aunt of Richard Barton

 

No baptism at Wotton. Ann Humphreys married Charles Willmot, a blacksmith.

Their children were cousins of Abraham Humphreys:

Thomas Humphreys was baptized on 26th May 1717 at Wotton.

Thomas married Han. Spencer on 3rd July 1743 at Wotton-under-Edge and they had at least five children.

Thomas was probably buried on 25th March 1765 at Wotton.

Parish Register: ‘Abraham Humphries and Mary Bennet both of the Parish were married by banns this 27th September 1767 by me …(?). This marriage was solemnized between Abraham Humphrys (signed name) and the mark of M. Bennett.’

Abraham was buried on 11th May 1796 aged fifty-two years at Wotton-under-Edge. Mary may have been buried on either 1st October 1786 or 2nd April 1790.

Thomas was baptized on 29th April 1770 at Wotton and buried on 24th May 1772 at Wotton-under-Edge.

Sarah was baptized on 1st May 1772 at Wotton. She may have married George Harris in 1804

In 1841 Sarah Harris was a shopkeeper aged sixty-five living with William aged thirty and Thomas aged twenty.

Thomas was baptized on 19th November 1777. He may have married Hester Bye on 15th November 1807.

Mary was baptized on 7th January 1781 at Wotton-under-Edge.


HANNAH PALSER, Great III Grandmother of Richard Barton

 

Daughter of Abraham Humphreys and Mary (nee Bennett)

Also Mother of Abraham, Elizabeth, Jane Lacey and Eliza

Hannah, daughter of Abraham and Mary Humphreys, was baptised at Wotton-under-Edge on 15th January 1775.

On 24th January 1798 Richard Palser married Hannah Humphreys at Wotton-under-Edge Parish Church and Richard signed the marriage register.

In the 1841 census return Richard and Hannah were living with their daughter Elizabeth at Rumskins in either the Sinwell or Bradley area of Wotton-under-Edge. Richard was described as a sixty-five-year-old brick maker and his wife was a sixty-five-year-old wool packer. Their daughter was a thirty-five-year-old cloth packer. All were born in Gloucestershire

The 1851 census records a family of Richard and Hannah Palser at Coomb Road. Richard was described as a pauper and brick maker, aged seventy-eight-years, and Hannah, whose age was given as seventy-six, was born in Wotton-under-Edge.

Hannah Palser died on 14th April 1853 at Pound’s Ground, Wotton-under-Edge. She was described on the death certificate as the seventy-seven-year-old Wife of Richard Palser a Labourer. The cause of death was given as – ‘sudden death by the visitation from God’. Edward Page, Registrar, registered the death on 16th April and the informant was W. Joyner Ellis, Coroner, of Berkeley.

She was probably the mother of Hannah Terrett. Richard and Hannah were then living next to Rowland Lacey and his wife Jane. The witnesses at the wedding of Daniel Terrett and Hannah Palser in 1831 were Richard (who signed his name) and Jane Palser.

Her husband, Richard Palser, survived her and died on 2nd February 1856, aged 84 years, of old age. He was described on his death certificate as ‘formerly a brick maker’.

The Wotton-under-Edge Parish Church registers describe Ann Palser as a seventy-eight-year-old woman of Coombe Road when she was buried on 18th April 1853. She was buried at 17:2 . Richard was buried in the same plot (2:17) on 8th February 1856. He was described as aged eighty-four-years and as living at London Road

 John Bennett married Mary White at Wotton-under-Edge on 7th April 1743.

A Mary White, daughter of James and Ann was baptised at North Nibley on 10th April 1720. A John Bennet, son of John and Sarah, was baptised at North Nibley on 5th August 1721. John son of Robert and Susannah was baptised on 20th May 1716 at Wotton. John son of Samuel and Martha was baptised at Wotton on 5th January 1719.

There is an Overseers reference, Glos Archives P230 OV 3/2/15:
