A Katherine Longden, daughter of Arthur Longden, was baptised at Hawkesbury on 2nd March 1605. She had siblings Arthur, baptised July 1609, Joan baptised 1610, John baptised 1612 and Margaret baptised 18th December 1614.

Giles Allen son of John Allen was baptised on 14th June 1677 at Hawkesbury.

Giles Allen the Younger married Elizabeth May on 1st June 1704 at Hawkesbury. An Elizabeth May, daughter of John May was baptised at Hawkesbury on 13th February 1675.

Giles made his will in 1742. He was described as a Blacksmith. He was buried on 5th March 1741 at Hawkesbury.

Giles Allin II was born in 1713 and baptised at Hawkesbury on 9th December 1713 the son of Giles Allin and Elizabeth, his wife.

Giles Allin II married Ann Hale on 1st January 1744. She was buried at Hawkesbury on October 13th 1745.

 Giles Allin II then married Sarah Winston on 8th March 1746 at Hawkesbury. He was described as a Dairyman of Hawkesbury in 1786. He was buried at Hawkesbury on 13th November 1787. His will was made on 31st October 1786.

In the Name of God Amen I Giles Allin of the Parish of Hawkesbury in the County of Gloucester Dairyman being in a good state of bodily health and of sound mind and understanding praised be to God & reflecting on the uncertainty of this Mortal Life do therefore make and declare this to be my last will and testament, and trust and commend my soul to the almighty creator hoping through the merits and intersession of my dear redeemer Christ Jesus to have a full pardon of my sins and to inherit everlasting life and my body I commit to the earth to be decently interred at the discretion of my Executrix herein after named and as to such worldly estate as the Lord of his infinite goodness hath been pleased to bless me I give and dispose thereof as followeth First of all I give and bequeath unto my sons and daughters namely George Allin, Daniel Allin, Elizabeth Trotman Widow, and Ann Davis the now wife of Richard Davis, the sum of one shilling a piece and no more, and to be paid to each of them soon after my death, the reason of my not giving to my said sons and daughters no more is because I have already given to each of them his her and their fortune already and also to let them know that they were not forgotten by me, and for all the rest and residuary of my goods cattle and chattels and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever after the payment and discharge of my debts legacies and funeral expenses I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Sarah Allin to hold to her my said wife as and for her own proper goods cattle and chattels and personal estate forever and of this my last Will and testament do also hereby make nominate and appoint her my said wife Sarah Allin to be sole Executrix and presidentary Legatee and lastly I do hereby revoke and make void all former Wills by me either made or declared In witness whereof I Giles Allin have to this my last Will and Testament setting hand and seal the thirty first day of October in the year of our Lord Christ one Thousand seven Hundred and Eighty Six.

SARAH ALLIN, Great VI Grandmother of Richard Barton

Sarah Winston married Giles Allin on 8th March 1746 at Hawkesbury. They had at least four children. Sarah was appointed sole executrix in her father’s will of 1786.


The children of Giles and Sarah Allin were Great VI Aunts and Uncles:

GILES ALLEN, Great VI Uncle of Richard Barton

 

Giles Allen was baptised at Hawkesbury on 31st January 1750. He was buried on 20th April 1779 aged twenty-eight-years at Hawkesbury, (Bigland)


GEORGE ALLEN, Great VI Uncle of Richard Barton

 

George Allen was baptised on 13th April 1755 at Hawkesbury. He may have been buried at Hawkesbury on 8th October 1807.


 

DANIEL ALLEN, Great VI Uncle of Richard Barton

Daniel Allen was baptised at Hawkesbury on 22nd September 1757. He was a Yeoman and married Esther who died on 8th February 1818 aged 55 years. He died on 5th February 1821 aged 66 years. Both are buried at Hawkesbury

 

  1. Plain, very low slab on slab base. 910mm wide, 1840mm long, 80mm high.
    Sacred to the memory of Esther, wife of Daniel Allen of this parish who departed this life February the 8th 1818 aged 55 years. Also of Elizabeth their daughter who died in her infancy. Likewise of Sarah wife of James Goulter and daughter of the above Daniel and Esther Allen who died August 23rd 1821 aged 36 years.

THIS IS THE LAST WILL and TESTAMENT of me Daniel ALLEN of Hawkesbury in the County of Gloucester and I give and bequeath unto my son Daniel Allen and my friends Charles HOPKINS of Alderley in the same County Gentleman and Thomas HOPKINS of Mountneys in the Parish of Kingswood in the County of Wilts Gentleman the sum of Two Thousand Pounds to be paid assigned or transferred to them or the survivors or survivor of them his executors or administrators at the expiration of twelve calendar months next after my

decease upon trust that they, the said Daniel ALLEN., Charles HOPKINS., and Thomas HOPKINS, or the survivors or survivor of them his executors or administrators do and shall either continue the said sum of Two Thousand Pounds on the present securities in or upon which the same is now or may be invested at the time of my decease or otherwise call in the said sum of Two Thousand Pounds and again lay out place or invest the same and the interest and proceeds yearly from time to time as owed interest shall be co< > in or upon Government or other sufficient security or securities and from time to time to call in alter vary and change the same securities as they or he shall think proper until my grandchildren namely: William RODWAY., Charles RODWAY and Sarah RODWAY of Upton the children of  my late daughter Esther the bereaved wife of William RODWAY of Upton in the said

GOULTOR., a male infant unbaptized as far as I know, the children of my later bereaved daughter Sarah the wife of James GOULTOR of Acton Turville in the said County of Gloucester., Farmer shall co-operatively attain that age of twenty one years and as and when they shall co-operatively attain that age then Will is and I do hereby direct my said Trustees and the survivor or survivors of them to call and get in so much at that time shall be the equal part or share as well as original as < > of the said grandchild so attaining twenty one years of age of and in the said sum of two thousand pounds and its interest and pay the same to such grandchild to or for his or her own use or benefit but in the case any or either of my said grandchildren shall happen to die before his her or their age of twenty one years without leaving lawful issue of his her or their body or bodies and not otherwise it being my will and intention that in the event of either of such grandchildren departing this life under the age of twenty one years leaving lawful issue such issue shall stand in the place of his her or their parent then I will that the share or shares of her of them so dying and not leaving issue as aforesaid of and in the < > < > monies and its interest and accumulations shall go and be paid unto the survivors of them share and share alike as and when his age or their original share or shares is or are herein before directed to be paid and shall be subject to the same routingway or survivorousy over again to the others or other of them in case of the death afterwards of any other or others of the said children as is herein before provided < > his her or their original share or shares all my lands and real estates and all and < > my monies and securities for money, stock, household goods and furniture and all other my personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever < > < > may sit? possessed or subject as to my personal estate to the payment of the said sum of Two Thousand Pounds and to it payment of my just debts and funeral and testamentary bequests I give devise and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my said son Daniel ALLEN his heirs executors, administrators a asoigus? To and for his and their absolute use and benefit and I so hereby devise roustitute and appoint my said son Daniel ALLEN sole executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former and other < > by me made and I do hereby declare that my said trustees herebefore appointed and each and every of them shall be charged and chargeable < > only for such monies as they co-operatively shall actually receive by virtue of the trust hereby in their c/rep___ and that neither of them shall be answerable or accountable for the other or others of them but just for his own acts only and that they or any of them shall not be answerable or accountable for any Banker or Broker or the person with whom or in whose hands any part of the trust monies shall or may be deposited or lodged for safe custody or otherwise in his constitution of the trusts of this my Will and that they or any of them shall not be answerable for the infulfillment or deficiency of any security or securities stocks or funds in or upon which the said trust monies or any part thereof shall be placed out or invested nor for any other misfortune loss or damages which may happen in the execution of the trusts aforesaid or in colation thereunto except the same shall happen by or through their own wilful defaults respectively and of said trustees and of my said trustees and any of them shall or may by and out of the monies which shall come to their hands by virtue of he terms of this my Will obtain to and reimburse themselves and himself all costs charges and expenses which they shall or may incur or sustain from or be put into in or about the trusts aforesaid < > < >unto in witness I the said David ALLEN the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament routained in four sheets of paper to the first three objects thereof set my hand and to this fourth and last sheet my hand and Seal this twenty first day of December., One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty One. ANN DAVIS, Great IV Aunt of Richard Barton

Ann referred to as “now the wife of Richard Davis” in her father’s will of 1786. They were married by licence on 8th July 1783 at Hawkesbury. He was described as of Pucklechurch


ELIZABETH TROTMAN, Great V Grandmother of Richard Barton

Daughter of Giles Allin and Sarah (nee Winston)

Also Mother of Martha, Thomas, Nicholas, Samuel, Sarah Allen, John and Martha Collins

Elizabeth Allen was baptised at Hawkesbury on 13th May 1747. A daughter of Giles and Sarah Allin.

Elizabeth Allen married Nicholas Trotman IV at Hawkesbury on 10th October 1763. The couple had nine children who were baptised at Hawkesbury between 1764 and 1779; the eldest, Martha, died at the age of twelve years.

Nicholas Trotman IV died on 17th December 1780, aged forty-five years. The burial took place at Hawkesbury on 21st December and his will was proved on 9th July 1782, his wife being sworn as executrix. The estate was valued at over £100 and less than £300.

Nicholas died a young man with eight children and with the possibility that his wife was pregnant again – ‘now in case my said wife shall be pregnant with any other child or children at or before the time of my death and shall be delivered thereof and such child or children should happen to live my will is that such child or children shall have an equal share with my said wife and my said existing seven children’. He was anxious to provide for the family through the terms of his will and he appointed as his trustees Thomas Partridge, a Gentleman of Hillesley and John Limbrick, a Yeoman of Hawkesbury Upton.

Elizabeth Trotman, his widow, lived until 1808 when she was buried at Hawkesbury on 10th April in that year.

John May made his will on 3rd August 1673. He stated that he was a Yeoman of Hawkesbury.

He referred to his loving wife, Margery, his son John May and daughters Alice and Elizabeth.

John was buried at Hawkesbury on 27th August 1673 and Margery, his widow, on 3rd March 1684.

JOHN MAY, Great VIII Grandfather of Richard Barton

John May was born in about 1648. He was a Yeoman of Hawkesbury.

He married Mary Tidnam, alias Clearke on 6th April 1675. She was buried at Hawkesbury on 18th April 1697. John May then married Hester Jobins at Thornbury on 8th July 1697. She was in turn buried at Hawkesbury on 25th December 1747 aged eighty years (Bigland).

John made his will on 16th June 1719. He made bequests of one shilling to his sons John, Daniel and Christopher and his daughters Elizabeth, Alice and Anne and to Hester twenty pounds. His wife Hester was to receive a bequest on the condition that she cared for his daughter, Mary, Mary was to receive £50 but it was to be kept for her by Giles Allen.

John was buried at Hawkesbury on 1st January 1731 aged eighty-three-years (Bigland).

Mary was baptised on 25th November 1677. Her father made provision for her care in his will of 1719.

John was baptised on 29th February 1678. He probably married Elinor Higgs at Horton on 18th January 1704.

Daniel May was baptised at Hawkesbury on 14th February 1680.

 


 

ALICE MAY, Great VIII Aunt of Richard Barton

 

Alice was baptised at Hawkesbury on 14th May 1683.

 

 

ANNE MAY, Great VIII Aunt of Richard Barton

 

Anne was baptised at Hawkesbury on 1st January 1685.

 


 

CHRISTOPHER MAY, Great VIII Uncle of Richard Barton

 

Christopher May was baptised on 1st June 1688 at Hawkesbury. He was buried in Horton and his memorial stone records that he died on 31st December 1731 aged forty-three-years.


The Child of John and Hester May was a half Great VIII Aunt:

 

HESTER ALWAY, Half Great VIII Aunt of Richard Barton

 

Hester May was baptised on 6th April 1702. She married Daniel Allway on 19th April 1720 at Horton. Daniel was baptised on 12th March 1708 and died on 23rd April 1772. Hester died in 1791. Daniel was referred to in the will of Giles Allen, his brother-in-law.

A Katherine Longden, daughter of Arthur Longden, was baptised at Hawkesbury on 2nd March 1605. She had siblings Arthur, baptised July 1609, Joan baptised 1610, John baptised 1612 and Margaret baptised 18th December 1614.

 

In the 1608 Men at Arms for Hawkesbury we find Arthur Longden, weaver, 2. (40), ca. tr.
