Robert Thurston was born in about 1620. He may have married Elizabeth Sam(p)son on 9th February 1640/1 at Olveston and Robert was described at that time as a Baker of Thornbury. He may have married Elizabeth Purlin see www prattens.

Robert and Elizabeth had at least five children who were born between 1645 and 1662 and all married. In 1645 Robert Thurston was described as a Mercer in the Baptism entry for his daughter Mary. He was probably Mayor of Thornbury in 1666/7 and again in1677/8. He was mentioned in a Thornbury Rent roll for 1670 with rent for a property on the west side of the High Street – of ‘a red rose at Midsomer’. He was a bondman and described as a gentleman on a marriage licence of his daughter Elizabeth in 1673 and he was described as a gentleman on another Marriage Licence dated 1666. On 2nd June 1665 he was enfeoffed at Thornbury (see grandson John Thurston for more details of this).

Robert Thurston the elder died on 27th March 1704 and was buried at Thornbury on 31st March 1704 aged eighty-four years. His wife, Elizabeth, ‘wife of Robert Thurston senior Alderman’ was buried on 25th February 1702/3 at Thornbury. Ralph Bigland describes the following inscriptions in the middle aisle of Thornbury Parish Church:

‘Here lyeth the Body of Robert Thurston Senior, who departed this life the 27th day of March Anno  Domini 1704 aged 84 years. Here lieth the Body of Elizabeth, late wife of William Marsh of this Parish, Gent who departed this life the 30th day of November 1751 aged 71 years.’

‘Herre lyeth the Body of John Thurston, son of Robert Thurston Senior and Elizabeth his wife, who deceased the 1st day of February, 1691 aged 29 years. Also here lyeth the Body of Elisabeth Thurston, the wife of Robert Thurston senior, who departed this life the 20th day of February 1702 aged (?) years 11 months. Here lyeth the Body of William Marsh of this Parish Gent, who departed this life the 7th day of March 1750, aged 77 years.

‘In 1704 John Thurston v Marsh Thornbury in Bridges 519-599 or 319-99 Chancery Proceedings and in Society of Genealogists Fothergill Collection mentions the will of Robert Thurston the elder deceased mercer of Thornbury, his granddaughter and sole executor Sarah Marsh, his grandson John Thurston gent of Bristol and Elizabeth Thurston, children of Robert Thurston the younger, his granddaughter Elizabeth Hastley or Horsley (?). Case was against Sarah and Henry Marsh to get them to perform the will, land in occupation of John Tayler gent deceased.’

MARY BARTON, Great VII Grandmother of Richard John Barton

Mary Thurston was born on 29th November 1645 at Thornbury. Mary was born on 29th November 1645, the daughter of Robert Thurston, a Baker of Thornbury and his wife, Elizabeth, nee Sampson. She married John Barton on 25th June 1666 at Thornbury and died on 1st May 1691. They had six children baptised at Thornbury between 1667 and 1685.

In his will there was a reference to his wife, Mary, and his sons, Thomas and John, who were not yet twenty-one-years-old. He also mentioned his daughters- Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah and Anne – who were to receive £70 each. He referred to property in Chippin Street bought from Thomas Shipway and Henry Lucke. There is reference to “My Father, Robert Barton” and “Thomas Barton, my brother” and “Robert Thurston my brother-in-law”. The witnesses were Robert, Timothy and John Thurston.
