Thomas Shipway married Margaret Pearce on 22nd February 1727/8 at Berkeley. The register entry describes them as ‘Thomas Shipway of Charfield and Margaret Pearce of the parish’. They were the parents of Betty who was baptised at Charfield on 4th November 1728. Their son, John Shipway, was baptised at Stone on 8th May 1730. A sister, Rebecca, was also baptised at Stone a year later on 24th May 1731. There are no further references in the church registers to the family being at Stone until 1753 when a grandchild was baptised there.

Thomas Shipway of the tything of Kington was buried at Thornbury on 2nd June 1761 and Margaret Shipway on 22nd July 1762.

A Margrett Pearce, daughter of Joseph Pearce, blacksmith, was baptised at Thornbury on 1st June 1701.

Margaret Pearce married Thomas Shipway on 22nd February 1727/8 at Berkeley. They were the parents of John Shipway who was baptised at Stone on 8th May 1730 and grandparents of Sarah Shipway who married Thomas Allen of Hill. A sister, Rebecca, was also baptised at Stone a year later on 24th May 1731. There are no further references in the church registers to the family being at Stone until 1753 when a grandchild was baptised there.

John Shipway was baptised at Stone on 8th May 1730. He was referred to as a son of Thomas and Margaret Shipway.

John Shipway married Ann Peglar at Berkeley on 29th September 1754. Both were described as ‘of the parish’ and the groom’s name is given as Jno. There is a baptism of their eldest daughter, Sarah, on 9th March 1753/4 at Stone. She became the bride of Thomas Allen of Rockhampton. There are ten other children of John and Ann baptised at Stone between 1756 and 1773. Mary died in 1778 aged twenty-two years, Susannah died in 1770 aged ten years, the elder John died in 1770 aged eight years, William died in 1784 aged nineteen years. Ann died a few months old in 1770, the younger John died in 1773 aged two years and Elizabeth died in infancy during that year. It is likely that the family was struck down by smallpox in 1770.

John Shipway was buried on 26th July 1803 at Stone.

Ann Peglar, the daughter of William and Sarah Peglar was baptised at Stone on 16th April 1730.

She married John Shipway at Berkeley on 29th September 1754 Both were described as ‘of the parish’ and the groom’s name is given as Jno. There is a baptism of a daughter, Sarah, on 9th March 1753/4 at Stone. She became the bride of Thomas Allen of Rockhampton. There are ten other children of John and Ann baptised at Stone between 1756 and 1773. Mary died in 1778 aged twenty-two years, Susannah died in 1770 aged ten years, the elder John died in 1770 aged eight years, William died in 1784 aged nineteen years. SARAH ALLEN, Great IV Grandmother of Richard Barton

Sarah Shipway was the daughter of John and Anne Shipway of Stone and she was baptised at Stone on 9th March 1754/5.

Sarah Shipway married Thomas Allen at Stone on 13th July 1778. The groom was described as of the parish of Rockhampton and neither could sign their name. Thomas Allen was born in about 1751 and the newly weds later settled at Hill.

Thomas and Sarah had at least seven children. The eldest, Thomas, was baptised at Stone in 1778; Daniel and Hester were baptised at Rockhampton in 1780 and 1782 and the four younger ones at Hill between 1785 and 1793. Of the children, Thomas became a Mariner of Oldbury-on-Severn and Daniel was a Gardener of Rockhampton.

Sarah Allen died on 5th August 1837 at Hill Pile in the Parish of Hill. On the death certificate she was described as an eighty-three-year-old Widow and the cause of death was given as ‘Stoppage’. James Darke, Registrar, registered the death on 6th August and the informant was Joseph Allen of Hill, the Son, who made his mark.

The Burial register would indicate that she was buried on 9th August and the age given was 83 years.
