JOHN PEGLAR, Great VII Grandfather of Richard Barton

John Peglar married Elizabeth Jobbins at Stone on 6th April 1702.

Elizabeth was probably the daughter of Robert Jobbins and baptised at Stone on 21st December 1673. A Robert Jobins was buried at Berkeley in 1684.

William Peglar was baptised on 27th April 1708 at Stone. He married Sarah Powell at Dursley on 4th November 1726. They were described as ‘foreigners’. Sarah was probably baptised at Berkeley on 10th January 1706. They had at least nine children who were baptised at Stone between 1728 and 1747.

Sarah was probably the daughter of Thomas Powell who was baptised at Berkeley on 10th January 1706 (old time). If this is so her parents might be Thomas Powell and Sarah Smith who married at Stone on 26th March 1706 and were described in the register as ‘of Hinton’.

If this is so Thomas may be the son of Thomas and Margaret Powell who was baptised on 24th February 1689 at Stone. Siblings include Margaret baptised on 27th January 1691; Daniel baptised on 18th October 1693 and Joseph baptised on 18th February 1697, all at Stone.

Sarah Powell married William Peglar at Dursley on 4th November 1726. They were described as ‘foreigners’. William Peglar was baptised on 27th April 1708 at Stone.

A William Peglar was a ratepayer of Stone in 1756.

A Sarah Pagler was buried at Stone on 22nd May 1764.

Ann Peglar, the daughter of William and Sarah Peglar was baptised at Stone on 16th April 1730.

She married John Shipway at Berkeley on 29th September 1754 Both were described as ‘of the parish’ and the groom’s name is given as Jno. There is a baptism of a daughter, Sarah, on 9th March 1753/4 at Stone. She became the bride of Thomas Allen of Rockhampton. There are ten other children of John and Ann baptised at Stone between 1756 and 1773. Mary died in 1778 aged twenty-twoTheir children were Great VI Aunts and Uncles

years, Susannah died in 1770 aged ten years, the elder John died in 1770 aged eight years, William died in 1784 aged nineteen years. Ann died a few months old in 1770, the younger John died in 1773 aged two years and Elizabeth died in infancy during 1773. It is likely that the family was struck by smallpox in 1770.

John Shipway was buried on 26th July 1803 at Stone.

Ann Shipway, widow, aged eighty-three-years, was buried on 26th February 1810 at Stone.
