Another lost work of Benjamin Bucknall is in Gower. Benjamin Bucknall designed the Old Rectory in Llanmadoc, Gower, for Rev J.D. Davies. The old village story is that J D Davies went to Switzerland in 1875, and then built a new Rectory on the site of the old in 1876. We have a letter written by the Rector concerning money from the Queen Anne’s Bounty, saying that his architect is Benjamin Bucknall. It is highly likely that J.D.Davies went to Lausanne with Bucknall, to the home of Viollet le Duc. Both the exterior and the interior of the new Rectory have many similarities to Villa la Vedette, the home of Le Duc, and JDDavies quotes the views of Le Duc several times in his History of West Gower.

Many thanks for this fascinating addition. These days I am involved with Woodchester Mansion and we are always interested to learn more about Bucknall. With kindest regards Richard
